Mobile Helping NBC Change The Way News is Delivered 300x168 Mobile Helping NBC Change The Way News is DeliveredWith the increasing trend of accessing everything — even the news — via mobile devices, NBC’s news division is mixing things up. Since many viewers don’t have the time or the patience to sit and watch a 30 minute news segment, NBC has partnered with and invested in NowThis News.

This partnership will allow NBC to post short form videos, even as short as 6-20 seconds long, which will be posted to social media sites such as Vine, Snapchat, and Instagram. These short news segments will also be available to viewers on NowThis News’s mobile app.

NowThis News has been gaining a lot of attention recently, and is backed by Lerer Ventures—Kenneth Lerer’s investment firm. They have also been attracting the attention of AOL, Yahoo, and many news publications—many of whom are both investing in their future growth, and utilizing their unique services.

While it is unclear the dollar amount that NBC invested in NowThis News, they now have an estimated 10% stake in the company. This partnership will allow NowThis News access to NBC producers and vast archives—in exchange for NBC having the rights to using any of NowThis News’s videos as they see fit.

This partnership has the potential to change the way news is reported and shared. This partnership is just one of many NBC is seeking out in an effort to stay competitive in the mobile world. Earlier this month NBC also announced a partnership with ReCode (formerly AlllThingsD) and Stringwire. These partnerships will allow NBC to access news segments and videos captured by various contributors from around the world—giving NBC access to news as soon as it breaks.

NBC Universal News Group chairwoman, Patricia Fili-Krushel describes the recent investments as a “change in philosophy” and recognizes the need to evolve with the times, and broaden their platform.

NowThis News opened its doors in SoHo in 2012. Their small team of 30 employees has experience in news and media, such as ABC, NBC, and The Washington Post. They provide short form news segments that do not go over 2 minutes in length, many of which are only 6, 10, or 20 seconds long. They currently produce about 50 segments a day, and it will be interesting to see if that number increases now that they have partnered with NBC.

While NowThis News does not currently link their short form news segments to longer or more detailed content—it is on the list to do in the near future. This partnership is a shining example of how collaboration is the key to success.
